The Consumption Of Red Wine For A Healthy Lifestyle

The Consumption Of Red Wine For A Healthy Lifestyle

As we discussed in the previous post, the Mediterranean diet is a balanced and healthy eating pattern, thanks to the consumption of different food groups, among which the consumption of wine is moderate. Surely many of you will have heard about the benefits of red wine consumption on cardiovascular disease (CVD). But … Which component of the wine gives this possible cardioprotective effect? What is the recommended consumption? Next, we will go into much depth on these topics so that we know how to consume red wine in a moderate, responsible way that is compatible with a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The CVD is the leading cause of death worldwide, it is important to note that every year more people die from CVD than from any other cause and it is estimated that in 2012 17.5 million people died, which represents a 31% of all deaths registered in the world. The antioxidants contained in red wine, called ‘polyphenols’, are the cause of the potential beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases. The one that more protagonism is having in the last investigations is the denominated resveratrol, polifenol that is in great amounts in the skin of the grape. Scientific evidence shows that both resveratrol and wine intake are associated with an improvement in blood lipid profile, control of fasting blood glucose levels and improvements in heart rate, suggesting that the intake of resveratrol through the consumption of wine could help to reduce the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. These associations are produced with low to moderate consumption of red wine. And here the second question arises, what is a low-moderate consumption? To resolve this doubt we refer to the recommendations issued by the Spanish Society of Community Nutrition (SENC) in its Guide to healthy eating, which describes that should not exceed 2-3 glasses of wine a day in men, and 1-1.5 glasses of wine in women, being 1 glass of wine about 80-100 ml. Why Spanish Wines From D.o. Castilla La Mancha Are Popular In The World Wine Market?

Why Spanish Wines From D.O. Castilla La Mancha Are Popular In The World Wine Market?

With its sprawling vineyards, windmills, olive plantations, Manchego cheese, and Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel Don Quixote, Castilla-La Mancha remains as a major symbol of Spanish culture and traditions. Castilla-La Mancha produces half of Spanish wines, which are primarily sold in bulk forms and exported. Castilla-La Mancha’s wine producers greatly benefit from the region’s highly-advanced irrigation, harvest mechanization, and storage capabilities. Additionally, EU subsidies, lower labour costs, and advanced infrastructure promote the production of high-quality wines that come at a price which is almost fifty percent lower than the prices of wines sold in France. The region is also noted for some of its top wineries, referred to as “bodegas”. Wines produced in this region are noted for their European character and intensified flavors. The prices range from $10 for beverages under the Castilla-La Mancha IGP designation to $100 for the bold red blends that are sold under the Vino de Pago title. It was Carlos Falcó Fernandez de Córdova of Dominio de Valdepusa in the Méntrida DO who is accredited with the honor of instilling quality to Castilla-La Mancha wines. Falcó completed a course in winemaking in 1964 at UC Davis and introduced French grapes and modern irrigation systems in Castilla-La Mancha. La Mancha offers the ideal setting for grape cultivation with grapes remaining exposed to sunshine for long hours and passing through a healthy ripening cycle. While the yield per hectare remains moderate, the grapes that are produced have a premium quality. The social and economic significance of the vineyards of Castilla-La Mancha accounts for the region’s cultural heritage. The region is home to the largest vineyard in the world, stretching over an area of 600.000 hectares and making up for 50 percent of Spain’s grape cultivation area. Castilla-La Mancha dominates Spain’s wine-producing landscape with its grape varieties, crop cultivation methods and technologies, output quality and price/quality ratio of its wines. The region’s wine and grape-juice production falls in the 528-660 gallon range. The quality of our wines from the Zagarrón collection (D.O. Castilla la Mancha) won numerous national and international awards over more than 60 years. So far, Zagarrón, Vinos y Viñedos has garnered more than 50 awards that represent the recognition of its excellence and the well-done work of its team of professionals.
