With its sprawling vineyards, windmills, olive plantations, Manchego cheese, and Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel Don Quixote, Castilla-La Mancha remains as a major symbol of Spanish culture and traditions.
Castilla-La Mancha produces half of Spanish wines, which are primarily sold in bulk forms and exported. Castilla-La Mancha’s wine producers greatly benefit from the region’s highly-advanced irrigation, harvest mechanization, and storage capabilities. Additionally, EU subsidies, lower labour costs, and advanced infrastructure promote the production of high-quality wines that come at a price which is almost fifty percent lower than the prices of wines sold in France.
The region is also noted for some of its top wineries, referred to as “bodegasâ€.
Wines produced in this region are noted for their European character and intensified flavors. The prices range from $10 for beverages under the Castilla-La Mancha IGP designation to $100 for the bold red blends that are sold under the Vino de Pago title. It was Carlos Falcó Fernandez de Córdova of Dominio de Valdepusa in the Méntrida DO who is accredited with the honor of instilling quality to Castilla-La Mancha wines. Falcó completed a course in winemaking in 1964 at UC Davis and introduced French grapes and modern irrigation systems in Castilla-La Mancha.
La Mancha offers the ideal setting for grape cultivation with grapes remaining exposed to sunshine for long hours and passing through a healthy ripening cycle. While the yield per hectare remains moderate, the grapes that are produced have a premium quality. The social and economic significance of the vineyards of Castilla-La Mancha accounts for the region’s cultural heritage. The region is home to the largest vineyard in the world, stretching over an area of 600.000 hectares and making up for 50 percent of Spain’s grape cultivation area.
Castilla-La Mancha dominates Spain’s wine-producing landscape with its grape varieties, crop cultivation methods and technologies, output quality and price/quality ratio of its wines. The region’s wine and grape-juice production falls in the 528-660 gallon range.
